What to wear to a family photoshoot?

So you’ve booked your professional family photoshoot and you’ve had that panic feeling, what the heck am I going to wear!?

This guide is here to help you nail it!!

Whether your session will be outside on one of our beautiful beaches, or at home, this guide is for you.

Everyone who books a session wonders what they should wear, to look and feel amazing. I’ll start by saying wear something you are comfortable in.
Please note that this isn’t me telling you what you should or shouldn’t wear, it’s just here if you want a read :)

  1. Colour coordinate, but don’t match

Start with a couple of colours you have in mind, and build everyone’s outfits around those. Start with your own outfit and work out everyone elses from there. To choose a colour scheme, think about where in your home you want to display the photos, and try to wear outfits that will look great in that particular room … these images are to be cherished after all.

In spring, light and airy colours look fantastic, a rainbow of light and airy hues include pale peach, blush pink, mint green, baby blue, creams, light gray, soft yellow, spring greens and Lavender.

In summer warm pinks and yellows look amazing, as do blues and and aquas. Creams look amazing all year round.

In autumn it’s all about browns, burnt orange, creams, mustard yellows and dark purples like mauve and aubergine. I must say the autumn palette is my absolute fav!

Winter can be lacking in colour outdoors, so the dark jewel colours are beautiful at this time of year. Emerald green, sapphire blue, dark purples and deep ruby red to name a few. Neutrals still look great in the winter too!

2. Avoid crazy logos and patterns.

Logos and crazy patterns can be quite distracting to an image. Try and keep it simple if you can. Too many patterns can make your photos look messy, so best to stay clear of multiples. We want the focus to be on you! Add one pattern to 3-4 plain colours.

Stay clear of close check too, it creates moire on digital images.

3. It’s all about textures!

If you can, add some texture to your outfits. In cooler months a large cable knit cardigan will look great on Mums adding that cosy feel. Little girls with textured tights would tie in great with this look.

Add in some accessories that match your colour palette to add depth to your outfits.

4. Be comfortable

This one is a biggie! You HAVE to be comfortable in whatever you wear. And that includes your footwear. Beach sessions in the summer everyone is best to be barefoot anyway.

If a flowy dress like the ones in my client wardrobe arent your thing, then please don’t feel you have to wear one. Jeans and a tee give a lovely relaxed vibe as well. Just make sure you are true to yourself.

5. Some extras

For Mums

I usually say to to start planning your outfit with Mum. A flowy dress or a skirt with texture look amazing in photos. You can swish them and they can show lots of movement in which give a beautiful end image.

I keep a range of dresses for mums so please check out my instagram highlights to see them.

Be careful of bra straps showing or see through items.

For Dads

A plain non logo t-shirt or shirt works best for dad's. If it's cooler add a textured jumper or jacket.

Chinos or shorts are a great way of adding more colour to dads outfit.

Please avoid large logo clothing, close check/stripes, and hoodies

For toddlers

Rompers are amazing for toddlers. They hide their nappy and can't ride up their little tummies when you are throwing them about for smiles.

Dresses are adorable on little girls! Try pairing with some textured tights and or long socks in colder weather. A chunky knit jumper or cardigan works well too.

Beanie hats on toddlers, need I say any more <3
